Problem

Analyzing user surveys has revealed that users find it difficult to understand the purpose of two icons that appear when streaming live TV.

Solution

Two new icons that visualize and communicate the functions through a simple design. The primary focus during this project has been to ensure simplicity, usability and clean lines.

 

The icon is now visible in Tele2 Play, across all platforms.

Solution

Two new icons that visualize and communicate the functions through a simple design. The primary focus during this project has been to ensure simplicity, usability and clean lines.

 

The icon is now visible in Tele2 Play, across all platforms.

Research

Many users find it difficult to understand what the icon symbolizes.

By reviewing and analyzing surveys and documentation from previously conducted usability tests, it became clear that many users had difficulty understanding the icon and its function – therefore there was a strong need to clarify the icon.

Competitive analysis and benchmarking helped me gather inspiration.

To get inspiration and identify best practices, I did competitive analysis and benchmarking. I explored how Netflix, SVT Play and Telia Play visualised it or similar features.

Exploration

It's about finding a variant that communicates the function.

Through several sketches I explored different designs of the icons.

After design reviews where I exchanged ideas with my design colleagues, I eventually landed on a variant that expresses the functions with simple shapes.

Delivery

Small adjustments clarify the functions of the icons.

I delivered two different icons that change appearance depending on which function is active. The icons also have a ‘hover’ mode which are the ones with a white background.
The final icons are consistent with the rest of Tele2 Play’s visual appearance. The line next to the arrow makes it clear that you are rewinding to the beginning of the programme or back to the live broadcast.

The Start Over function allows you to watch a live broadcast program from the beginning, at the touch of a button.

The back to live function is just as it sounds – you get back to the live broadcast at the blink of an eye.
