Problem

Almost half of the Swedish population say that the most time-consuming everyday task is figuring out what to eat for dinner, which according to research leads to unnecessary conflicts.

Solution

I have developed an app to simplify people’s daily lives by suggesting recipes adapted to their diets and based on the food they have at home.

The aim of the app is to inspire people to try new recipes and raise awareness about food waste and climate impact.

01

Research

Survey shows that unnecessary conflicts around food planning occur in people's daily lives

According to a survey by Kantar Sifo, 44% of the Swedish population think that the most time-consuming everyday task is figuring out what to eat for dinner. The figure is even higher for parents with young children.

In addition to being time-consuming, research also shows that discussions about what to eat contribute to unnecessary conflicts.

Research methods

Benchmarking

To get inspiration for my service, I downloaded similar services to compare good and less good features and functions that I personally lacked and that would fit well in this service.

Personas

I created two personas that represent the average user of the service. By keeping my personas in mind, I visualized their reality, challenges and problems. This allowed me to create relevant and valuable features for them.

Customer journey map

To get a better understanding of how the user uses my service, I created a customer journey map. The map includes touch points and pain points to find parts of the customer journey that can be improved.

User flow & Storyboard

Creating a user flow and storyboard gave me a clearer picture of the steps the user takes in the service. It also helped me to structure the flow and the pages to be developed for user testing.

03

Visual identity

I created an inspiring and smooth interface that is accessible to everyone.

To get a minimalistic and harmonious look, I chose calm colors that have a contrast ratio of 6.72:1 (WCAG AA for normal text size).

I chose two fonts, Qaligo for the logo and League Spartan which is a sans serif font for all other text in the app. I have worked with hierarchies and followed the WCAG web guidelines when choosing the text size, all text in the prototype is at least 16 pixels, to ensure good readability throughout the prototype and achieve the
throughout the prototype and meet accessibility requirements.

05

Usability test

Time to see what works more or less smoothly.

I conducted a total of 5 usability tests where I guided the test participants and asked them to perform a number of tasks. I encouraged users to think out loud about what they saw, experienced and felt.

I asked the participants which features they liked and disliked and if there were any other features they would like to see in the service.

06

Analyze

I gained new perspectives and valuable insights

I received many suggestions and ideas for things that could be developed in the service.

All users appreciated the service, the idea of saving money and doing something good for the environment. They thought it was quick to get started, and many appreciated the ratings and comments on the recipes. The users liked the color scheme and the large pictures that inspired them and made them want to make the recipes.

One request was to be able to sort recipes by how many of the ingredients in the recipe they have at home. For example, if you are missing 2 ingredients, you still want to be able to see the recipe.
